Yuma Desert
South of Yuma along the Mexican border, this low Sonoran Desert plain is a sweep of sand dunes and sandy soils, including the Yuma Dunes, where rare plants such as sandfood grow and flat-tailed horned lizards and fringe-toed lizards live.
El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013, this Sonoran Desert reserve pairs a volcanic shield of black lava flows, cinder cones and huge circular craters with active sand dunes reaching about 200 meters high.
Quitobaquito Springs
One of the few reliable surface water sources in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, this spring-fed pond shelters the Quitobaquito pupfish and Sonoyta mud turtle. It sits along South Puerto Blanco Drive, a dirt and gravel road.
