Zibo to Maanshan Road Trip: Best Stops & Drive Guide

The drive from Zibo to Maanshan follows the G3 Beijing–Taipei Expressway for most of its 710 kilometers, cutting through the North China Plain before climbing into the hills of Anhui. One lesser-known fact: the route crosses the Huai River near Bengbu, a natural boundary historically dividing north and south China. Expect 8 to 9 hours of driving time without stops.

The scenery shifts from flat agricultural fields in Shandong to the low, forested hills of northern Anhui. Near the Huai River, you’ll see vast wheat and rice paddies, while the final stretch into Maanshan passes by the Yangtze River. The region’s cuisine changes from Shandong’s salty seafood dishes to Anhui’s freshwater fish and bamboo shoots, and you can sample both at highway rest stops or exit into towns like Zaozhuang or Bengbu.

One hidden off-route spot: the ancient water town of Sanhe in Hefei, about 50 km west of the G3, offers cobblestone streets and Ming-dynasty architecture. It’s a worthwhile detour if you have an extra half-day.

The G3 is a modern toll expressway with a posted speed limit of 120 km/h in most sections. As of 2025, fuel prices in Shandong and Anhui hover around ¥7.50 per liter for 92-octane, and service areas are positioned every 40–50 km.

Road quality on the G3 is generally good, but beware of heavy truck traffic near industrial zones from Zibo to Xuzhou, and always keep a safe following distance. In winter, fog is common along the Huai River valley, so plan for reduced visibility.

Rest areas are well-maintained with clean restrooms, and many have children’s play areas. For pets, most rest stops allow leashed animals, but it’s best to check with individual service areas. A two-hour driving rotation with a 15-minute break every 150 km is advisable; the Changshan service area near the Shandong–Anhui border is particularly spacious.
