Zhenjiang to Shangrao Road Trip: Scenic Drives & Hidden Gems

Departing from Zhenjiang, you leave behind the Jiangnan water towns where the Grand Canal meets the Yangtze River. This route traces ancient trade paths southwestward into the rugged hills of Jiangxi, with the first 150 km cruising past rice paddies before the terrain climbs toward the Wuyi Mountains.

As you cross into Anhui, the flat farmland gives way to tea terraces that cling to slopes like green staircases. The best panoramas appear just before the Taiping Lake Bridge (km 270), where the water mirrors the Huangshan peaks—a perfect photo op that requires a legal pull-off.

Near the Jiangxi border, the villages of Likeng and Wangkou are famous for their moon-shaped ponds and ancestral halls. Though off the expressway, a 20-minute detour on S307 leads to these cultural gems. Local merchants sell dried bamboo shoots and tea leaves—a great roadside snack.

Driving the full 710 km on G50 and G3 expressways takes about 9 hours without stops. Tolls average 350 RMB for a standard sedan, and fuel costs around 450 RMB if you maintain 100 km/h. Avoid weekends if possible—convoys of tour buses heading to Huangshan can add an hour of slow traffic.

Key fuel stops: plan to fill up at the SINOPEC station at the Guangde service area (km 190) and at the CNPC station near Wuyuan (km 480). Both have 24-hour convenience stores and clean restrooms.

For fatigue, rest every 2 hours at one of the many 24-hour service plazas; the green tea served at the Shangrao North service area is surprisingly refreshing. If you're traveling with a dog, note that most service areas allow pets on a leash, but it's best to carry your own water bowl and waste bags—only a few have pet stations.
