Zhangjiajie to Huaihua: Hidden Gems Along the Road

The S10 highway linking Zhangjiajie and Huaihua traverses the limestone karst landscapes of western Hunan, a region known for its dramatic pinnacles and ancient culture. While the direct distance is 220 kilometers, the drive takes 4 hours due to winding roads and speed limits.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its towering quartzite pillars. Leaving it behind, the road hugs the Yuan River, exposing terraced rice fields and small villages.

These communities produce orange varieties and chrysanthemum tea. For a meal, local diners sell spicy Hunan dishes, including smoked meats and pickled vegetables.

The S10 expressway is modern, but the terrain necessitates occasional sharp curves and 90 km/h limits. Fuel stations appear every 50-60 kilometers, and the route passes via Yuanling county.
