Yangshuo to Beihai Drive: Karst Peaks to Coastal Breezes

The drive from Yangshuo to Beihai begins in the midst of China's most iconic karst landscape, where the Li River weaves through conical peaks that have inspired artists for centuries. From there, the route descends southward, leaving the limestone towers behind and opening onto the flat, coastal plains of the Beibu Gulf, ending at a beach resort known for its soft white sand.

This journey covers roughly 340 kilometers on the G78 and G7212 expressways, a drive that typically takes 4.5 to 5 hours under normal traffic conditions. The expressway is generally safe, with well-lit tunnels and bridges through the karst sections. However, be cautious of fog in the early morning and evening, especially in the lower-lying areas near rivers. Road quality is excellent, but watch for occasional slow-moving agricultural vehicles if you diverge onto local roads.

The first section of the drive from Yangshuo to Yangshuo's outskirts is dominated by the iconic karst towers, but these quickly give way to rolling hills and farmland as you approach Lipu and Mengshan. While the drive doesn't pass directly through any designated heritage zones, the initial and final segments of the journey offer views of the same geomorphological features that earned the region this classification in 2014.

As you approach Beihai, the landscape transitions to coastal flatlands, with shrimp farms and windbreaks of casuarina trees. The outskirts of Beihai are dotted with seafood restaurants, signaling your arrival at a culinary destination.

The most straightforward path is to take the G65 Baomao Expressway south from Yangshuo, then merge onto the G78 Shankun Expressway toward Wuzhou, and finally connect to the G7212 Liubei Expressway heading southeast to Beihai. Signage is bilingual in Mandarin and English, and tolls are paid electronically via ETC or cash, with total tolls around 120 RMB for a standard car.

Fuel stations are plentiful along the expressway, with both Sinopec and PetroChina outlets at major service areas such as those near Wuzhou and Yulin. For electric vehicles, fast-charging stations are increasingly common at these stops, though range anxiety is minimal given the short distance and mild climate.
