Yangshuo to Anshun: A Scenic Road Trip Guide

Begin in Yangshuo, where the Li River carves through the iconic karst landscape, then drive northwest into the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, home to the colossal Huangguoshu Waterfall. This route traces the ancient migration paths of the Miao and Buyi peoples, connecting two of China's most breathtaking regions.

The journey takes you from subtropical forests to highland plateaus, with a gradual elevation gain of over 1,000 meters. Along the way, you'll pass through Guizhou's 'bridge museum' of engineering marvels like the Beipanjiang Bridge, one of the world's highest. This route is best traveled in spring or autumn, when the climate is mild and the scenery is at its most vibrant.

The trip typically starts on the G65 from Yangshuo, then transitions to the G75 and G76 near Guiyang. Toll costs for a standard car total approximately ¥250-300 (US$35-45), and fuel prices are around ¥7-8 per liter. The route features 22 rest areas, with the major ones at Hechi, Maolan, and Qingyan.

The route is generally safe, but the Guizhou section in rainy season (June-August) can be foggy and wet; use fog lights and slow down. Rest areas open 24/7, with clean toilets and restaurants, making family travel easy. Playgrounds are presented at most large rest stops, while the scenic areas themselves are stroller-friendly.

Pets are allowed at rest stops and most open-air attractions, but not inside indoor museums. For overnight breaks, consider Duyun or Anshun, where hotels are pet-friendly if you ask. To manage fatigue, plan a stop every two hours; the Hechi rest area offers a view of the Longtan River, ideal for a five-minute stretch. Scenic viewpoints on the G75 provide safe pullouts where you can photograph the road winding through rice terraces.

The karst peaks of Yangshuo give way to Guizhou's dramatic canyons and waterfalls. The centerpiece is Huangguoshu Waterfall (77.8 m high, 101 m wide), visible from the highway. Beyond this, the route passes through culturally rich areas where Miao and Buyi communities are known for their intricate embroidery and batik textiles.

Local villages along the way offer genuine souvenirs at prices lower than city markets. You'll find the best stops and hidden gems between cities by venturing off the main highway for a few hundred meters. From street stalls serving sour fish soup to roadside banana growers, the commerce is small-scale but authentic.
