Yanan to Weinan Road Trip: Gorges, Terracotta & More

Yanan and Weinan sit across one of China's most under-appreciated driving corridors—a route that shifts from the yellow-earth badlands of the northern Shaanxi plateau to the lush foothills of the Qinling Mountains in just 300 kilometers. The old highway, G210, snakes through river-carved gorges and terraced fields, while the newer G65 expressway offers a faster but less scenic option. For most travelers, the drive takes about four hours on the expressway, but plan for six to seven if you want to absorb the actual landscape.

The G65 expressway is tolled and well-maintained, with rest stops every 30-40 km offering fuel, snacks, and clean toilets. Toll fees for a standard car are around ¥120. If you prefer the old G210, it's free but has more traffic, especially trucks, and the road surface can be uneven. Average speed on G65 is 100 km/h, but beware of speed cameras in tunnels.

• Fuel stations: Plentiful on G65; on G210, fill up in Yanan or Huangling before heading into rural stretches.
• Diesel and gasoline: Both available; check for 92 and 95 octane. Gas prices are roughly ¥7.50 per liter.
• Rest zones: G65 has service areas with restaurants and convenience stores; G210 has fewer, but you can stop at villages.

Weinan's urban center is well-connected by local roads, and parking is available at major attractions. If you're heading to the Qinling Mountains, the road quality is good, but the last few kilometers before trailheads are often gravel.

The landscape transitions from the Loess Plateau's terraced fields and deep gorges near Yanan to the fertile Guanzhong Plain, with the Qinling range rising on the horizon south of Xi'an. The Huangling area is known for its ancient cypress forests, and the Huangdi Mausoleum (the Yellow Emperor's tomb) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—one of the few along this route. Near Weinan, the Hua Shan mountain (also a UNESCO site) offers a dramatic granite peak, but that requires a separate detour.

Local commerce along the route is centered on apples and walnuts; you'll see roadside stands selling these in season (September-October). In Tongchuan, there's a ceramics industry, and you can buy handmade pottery at local markets.

Both highways are generally safe, but tunnels on G65 require extra caution due to reduced lighting and sudden speed changes. Keep your headlights on in tunnels, even in daylight. The route is family-friendly: service areas have playgrounds, and Weinan has a large science museum and a safari park (Qinling Wildlife Park) that kids love. For pets, most rest stops allow leashed animals, but attractions like the mausoleum do not; plan accordingly.

For fatigue management, plan to stop every two hours. The Xianyang service area (about midpoint) has a restaurant and a small garden where you can stretch. If you're traveling with children, pack snacks and water, as some rural stretches have limited food options.

Hidden off-route spots: Take exit 48 on G65 to visit the Zhenbei Terrace in Tongchuan, a lesser-known geological wonder with breathtaking views. Another detour is the Yaozhou Kiln Museum, about 20 km off the route, which showcases Tang dynasty ceramics.

Local cuisine worth trying: Weinan's version of 'bandeng noodle soup' and 'water pit mutton' in Yanan. Both are hearty, but not for the faint-hearted.
