Yaan to Neijiang Drive: Scenic Sichuan Itinerary

Before you set off, note that the Yaan to Neijiang corridor traces the southern edge of the Chengdu Plain, where the Longmen Mountains dissolve into the hills of the Sichuan Basin. This transition zone is geologically active, so expect occasional seismic reminders: the 2013 Lushan earthquake epicenter lies just north of Yaan, a fact worth respecting when choosing roadside lodgings.

The drive covers roughly 200 kilometers via the G5 Beijing–Kunming Expressway and the S66 Neijiang–Yibin Expressway, typically taking 2.5 to 3 hours without traffic. Whether you're heading to Neijiang for its sugar industry heritage or just passing through, here's how to make the most of the journey.

Fuel and route economics: Petrol stations cluster at service areas along the G5, with the Wuliang Service Area near Qionglai being a reliable pit stop. Prices align with provincial averages, but fill up before leaving Yaan as the stretch between Qionglai and Meishan has fewer options. Tolls cost approximately 100 RMB for a standard car, payable via ETC or cash.

Road quality on the G5 is excellent – a four-lane divided highway with smooth asphalt and clear signage. The S66 section into Neijiang is slightly older but well-maintained. For a different perspective, consider the parallel National Highway G318, which offers a slower, more rural alternative but adds an hour to your journey.

As you leave Yaan, the lush tea terraces of Mengding Mountain flank the highway – a UNESCO World Heritage site for its role in tea culture. About 30 minutes in, you'll cross the Qionglai Mountains, where mist often clings to the peaks, making for a dramatic entrance to the plain. This area receives high rainfall, so pack a rain jacket even in summer.

Midway, the town of Meishan serves as a cultural gateway: it's the hometown of the famous Song Dynasty poet Su Shi. Stop at the Three Su Shrine to pay respects, then sample local snacks like sweet osmanthus cake in the old town.

Infrastructure safety: The expressway is well-lit at interchanges, with crash barriers throughout. However, watch for slow-moving agricultural vehicles on the access roads near Meishan, especially during harvest season. Speed limits vary from 80–120 km/h, and electronic signage alerts drivers to conditions.

Family and child suitability: Service areas like the Longquan Lake Service Area (near the Longquan Mountains) offer clean restrooms, playgrounds, and fast-food options. For a healthier break, pack a picnic to enjoy at the Zhangfei Miao area, a historical site just off the S66.
