Xichang to Jiuzhaigou Drive: Scenic Route Guide

The old motorcade route from Xichang to Jiuzhaigou crosses the Anning River valley and climbs onto the Tibetan Plateau's edge. Since 2017, the G5 Beijing–Kunming Expressway shortcut reduces the former two-day haul to roughly eight hours via the Chengdu ring.

Road quality ranges from four-lane expressway to winding two-lane mountain road with blind curves. Landslides after rain are common; check the weather forecast and avoid night driving on the S303 segment. The highest pass, at 3300 m, might trigger mild altitude sickness in children—take it slow.

For kids, the pandas at the Bifengxia base near Ya'an are a welcome break, while the Jiuzhaigou scenic area's boardwalks are stroller-friendly, though the shuttle queues test patience. Pets are allowed at many roadside restaurants but are banned inside Jiuzhaigou—arrange a kennel in Pengzhou or Songpan.

Fatigue is the real danger; plan rest stops every 2 hours. The service areas on G5 are cleaner than those on S205, so use them for bathroom breaks and coffee. At the Mianyang North service area, a short walking trail behind the gas station offers a leg stretch and a glimpse of the Fu River valley.

Hidden off-route, the Qiang village of Taoping near Wenchuan preserves ancient stone defenses less than 2 km off S302, a detour worth an hour if time allows.

As you climb, eucalyptus groves give way to pine forests, and the air dries noticeably. At Songpan, the historic town's mud-brick walls and horse caravans hint at the ancient Tea-Horse Road. Further north, Huanglong's travertine pools and Jiuzhaigou's turquoise lakes are dual UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but entry fees (up to 169 CNY for Jiuzhaigou) and mandatory shuttle busses can crowd the trail.

The local Qiang and Tibetan villages offer homestays and handmade yak butter tea, a sharp contrast to the hotpot joints that dominate the lowlands.
