Begin in Wuzhou, a city at the confluence of the Xi and Gui rivers, and head west on the G78 Expressway toward Xingyi in Guizhou. The route slices through the karst landscape of Guangxi and Guizhou, where limestone towers rise sharply from rice paddies. The drive covers roughly 480 kilometers and takes about six hours under normal conditions, but plan extra time for stops.

This corridor crosses a climate transition: humid subtropical in Wuzhou to a milder, higher-altitude climate in Xingyi, which sits at about 1,200 meters. The elevation changes influence both scenery and road conditions. The expressway is well-maintained, multi-lane, and mostly straight, but curves and tunnels increase near the Guangxi–Guizhou border. Expect significant truck traffic, especially during harvest seasons.

Road safety is generally high on the G78, but the border area has sharp curves and tunnels that demand reduced speed. Observe speed limits (often 100 km/h on flat sections, 80 km/h in tunnels). Guardrails are present throughout. For peace of mind, keep a first-aid kit and emergency supplies in the trunk.

Local commerce thrives at rest areas and small towns along the way. Near the Guangxi–Guizhou border, you'll see stalls selling preserved plums and mushrooms from the region. Climatically, the route aesthetics shift from lush, low-country rice fields to terraced slopes and misty hills as you climb. The best season for driving is spring (March–May) when temperatures are mild and rains are not yet heavy. Autumn (October–November) offers clear skies and golden rice paddies. Summer brings intense heat and humidity in the valleys, while winter – though mild – can bring occasional frost.

The expressway is called G78 (Shantou–Kunming Expressway). It is tolled; calculate about 0.5 CNY per kilometer, so the one-way toll is roughly 240 CNY. Tolls are paid by cash or ETC at manned booths. Fuel stations appear every 60–80 km along the route. Diesel and gasoline prices are set nationally, hovering around 8 CNY per liter. Card payment is accepted at most stations.
