Winthrop to Sisters Road Trip: Cascades & High Desert

The North Cascades Highway (WA-20) is the wildest paved road in Washington. It closes every winter. This route from Winthrop, WA to Sisters, OR is a masterclass in landscape contrasts.

Winthrop sits at 1,760 feet. Sisters sits at 3,170 feet. The drive covers 240 miles (386 km) and 4–5 hours of driving time without stops. But you’ll want to stop.

The drive splits into three distinct zones: the North Cascades, the Columbia Basin, and the Eastern Cascades. Cell coverage is spotty between Winthrop and Mazama. Fill up before leaving Winthrop.

• Fuel stops: Twisp, Okanogan, Pateros, Chelan, Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Cle Elum, Ellensburg, Yakima (slight detour), and Bend (before Sisters).
• Towing services: Available in Twisp and Wenatchee. Carry a spare tire.
• Danger zones: WA-20 / North Cascades Highway has no services between Winthrop and Mazama. Blewett Pass (US-97) can be icy in spring.

Best time to drive: June through October. WA-20 closes from November to May at milepost 134. Check pass conditions before leaving.

Family-friendly stops: The Winthrop Ice Rink (seasonal), Leavenworth’s Nutcracker Museum, and the Wenatchee Riverfront Park.

• Pet-friendly: Most parks and trails allow leashed dogs. Leavenworth has a dog-friendly river walk.
• Restrooms: Available at visitor centers, state parks, and most restaurants.

Fatigue management: Plan stops every 2 hours. Pullouts on WA-20 numbered every few miles for rest.

From Winthrop to Twisp, you’re in the Methow Valley. Pine forests and wildflower meadows. Twisp is the cultural hub: local art galleries and the Twisp River Brewery.

The Columbia River at Pateros is a sharp transition. Apple orchards and vineyards dominate. Chelan offers the Lake Chelan AVA wine country.

Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed village. It’s kitschy but beloved. For quiet alpine scenery, drive the Tumwater Canyon east of Leavenworth.

South of Blewett Pass, the forests thin into shrub-steppe. Cle Elum has historic brick buildings. Ellensburg is home to Central Washington University and a lively farmers market.

• Wine tasting: Several wineries along US-97 near Yakima.

Cross into Oregon at the Maryhill Museum overlook (detour via US-97). The Deschutes River canyon is dramatic. Sisters is gateway to the Cascade Lakes and rock formations.
