The route from Winslow, Arizona to Saratoga, Wyoming stretches over 700 miles, crossing the Colorado Plateau and the southern Rockies. The drive crosses the Colorado Plateau, known for its red-rock canyons and volcanic fields. A notable landmark is Shiprock, a 1,500-foot volcanic neck sacred to the Navajo, visible from US-491 north of Gallup. The route also passes near Mesa Verde National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving ancient Puebloan cliff dwellings.

Local commerce along the way includes Navajo-owned trading posts in Teec Nos Pos and Ute Mountain tribal parks in Towaoc. In Durango, the historic Main Street offers galleries and coffee shops, while Pagosa Springs is known for its hot springs.
