Besh-Ba-Gowah
About a mile southwest of Globe, partially reconstructed pueblo rooms built by the Salado people, who lived here from 1225 to 1450 CE, sit beside a museum and botanical gardens. The Apache name roughly means "place of metal."
Globe Downtown Historic District
Globe grew into Gila County's seat and a copper mining center, and its downtown district preserves buildings from 1876 to 1935. Look for the Gila County Courthouse, the 1910 St. John's Episcopal Church, and the 1927 post office and courthouse.
Peridot Mesa
This dormant volcanic remnant on the San Carlos Apache Reservation gives the gemstone peridot its local fame and puts on big wildflower displays in spring. A tribal recreation permit is required, and only tribal members may collect peridot.
Governor Aker Observatory
Part of Eastern Arizona College's Discovery Park in Safford, the observatory houses a 20-inch Tinsley Cassegrain telescope used for public viewings. The park also has a history of astronomy gallery, a spacecraft simulator, and more than four miles of desert trails.
Roper Lake State Park
Near Safford, this lake park offers lakeside camping, camping cabins, and views of nearby Mount Graham. Its well-known hot tub is permanently closed.
Rex Allen Arizona Cowboy Museum and Willcox Cowboy Hall of Fame
This Willcox museum honors Rex Allen, the "Arizona Cowboy," with memorabilia from his rodeo, radio, film, and TV career; across the street stands his bronze statue, with his horse KoKo buried at its base.

Opened in 1907 and rebuilt after a 1928 fire, this downtown Douglas hotel has a lobby with a white Italian marble staircase, gold-leafed marble columns, and a 42-foot stained-glass desert mural by Ralph Baker.
