Road quality on US-12 is generally good but narrow with sharp curves between Kooskia and Lolo. Wildlife (deer, elk) is common at dawn/dusk. I-90 is divided highway with high speeds; watch for construction zones near Missoula.

Family-friendly stops include: Palouse Falls State Park (a 1-hour detour north of Dayton) with a 200-foot waterfall; the Clearwater River Recreation area for picnics; and the Missoula Carousel and Aerial Fire Depot in Missoula. Many pullouts along the Lolo Motorway (historic Nez Perce Trail) have interpretive signs for a quick learning break.

For fatigue management, take breaks every 2 hours. Recommended rest zones: Lewis and Clark Trail State Park (mile 35), the Kooskia Ranger Station, and the Lolo Pass Visitor Center. Keep a paper map as a backup for dead-zone navigation.

Winter driving (Nov-Mar) can require chains or snow tires. Lolo Pass is often closed briefly after heavy snow; check conditions at Idaho 511. Summer brings wildfire smoke and occasional road construction delays.
