The drive reveals three distinct biomes. From Tucson to Willcox, it's classic Sonoran Desert: saguaros, creosote, and reddish dust. Then, as you turn onto US-191, the terrain rises into grassland and alligator juniper forest. Finally, the approach to Safford opens into the Gila Valley, with cotton fields and pecan orchards.

Natural attractions to stop for

• Texas Canyon (east of Benson) – giant granite boulders, best seen at sunrise.
• Willcox Playa – a dry lake bed, seasonal birds including sandhill cranes (Nov-Feb).
• Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area – 23,000 acres of cottonwood-willow forest along the Gila River. Hike the 1-mile trail to a cave with pictographs.
