Torrey to Tropic Road Trip: Scenic Utah Drive Guide

Utah Highway 12, designated an All-American Road, connects Torrey to Tropic across 40 miles of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. This stretch climbs from 6,800 feet at Torrey to over 9,000 feet at Boulder Pass before descending into the red rock amphitheater of Tropic at 6,300 feet.

The route crosses the headwaters of the Escalante River and skirts the boundary of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It was originally a Paiute and Mormon livestock trail before being paved in the 1980s.

Local commerce thrives in small towns. In Boulder, burr oak furniture and local jams are specialties. Tropic has pioneer-era stone buildings and a thriving arts community. The Anasazi State Park Museum in Boulder showcases Ancestral Puebloan artifacts.

Highway 12 has few guardrails; keep to speed limits (55 mph max, often 30 mph on curves). Watch for livestock and wildlife, especially deer and elk at dawn/dusk.
