Torrey to Gilbert Road Trip: Canyons, Culture & Desert Drive

Leaving Torrey, Utah, you immediately face the 8,000-foot pass on UT-12 over Boulder Mountain. This route connects the high Colorado Plateau to the Sonoran Desert via US-89 and I-17, with a total driving time of about 10–11 hours without stops.

The drive crosses the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument and the Navajo Nation, offering some of the most dramatic geological transitions in the American West. For context, this is the same road used by the historic Hole-in-the-Rock expedition in 1879–80.

Cell service is nonexistent between Torrey and Escalante (about 50 miles). Download offline maps. The road quality on UT-12 and US-89 is paved but narrow with steep drop-offs. Watch for livestock on Navajo Nation roads.

• Family suitability: Yes, but kids get restless. Stop at Escalante Petrified Forest State Park for a short hike, or at Horseshoe Bend near Page (0.5 mile flat walk).
• Pet-friendly: Most rest stops allow pets; however, Navajo Nation requires pets on leashes at all times. Many trails in Glen Canyon are pet-friendly.
• Fatigue management: Plan breaks every 2 hours. Top recommendations: Calf Creek Recreation Area (milepost 75 on UT-12) for a waterfall hike; Glen Canyon Dam Overlook for a 15-minute stretch.
• Hidden spots: Just off UT-12 south of Torrey, the Lower Calf Creek Falls trail is a 5.5-mile round trip with a 120-foot waterfall. Another gem: the Paria Movie Set on US-89, a restored western frontier town used in movies.

Weather considerations: in winter, UT-12 over Boulder Mountain may close due to snow; check UDOT. Summer temperatures exceed 100°F in Page and Flagstaff, so carry extra water. Spring and fall are ideal with mild temperatures and clear skies.

This route passes the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and the Navajo Nation. The geological clock reverses from Jurassic Navajo Sandstone to Permian Kaibab Limestone as you descend.

• Earth's layers: At Torrey, you are on the Jurassic Entrada Sandstone; at Page, on the Triassic Chinle Formation; and near Flagstaff, on the Permian Kaibab Limestone.
• UNESCO sites: While none directly on the route, Mesa Verde National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is 100 miles east of US-89 near Cortez, CO, accessible via a detour from Kayenta, AZ.
• Local commerce: In Page, visit the Antelope Canyon Navajo tours; in Navajo Nation, support local vendors selling fry bread and jewelry at roadside stands.

Near the route, the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument offers the famous Paria Canyon and The Wave (permit required). The scenic background of towering cliffs and deep canyons makes this drive unforgettable.

The primary route is UT-12 south to US-89 at Kanab, then US-89 through Page and Flagstaff, finally I-17 and US-60 to Gilbert. Fuel availability is sparse between Torrey and Page, with only two gas stations in Boulder, UT and one in Escalante.
