Tongren to Zhangye: A Road Trip Through Qinghai’s Highlands

The Tongren–Zhangye route traces the old Silk Road’s eastern fringe, climbing from the Tibetan Plateau’s Yellow River valley at 2,400 m to the Hexi Corridor’s desert edge at 1,500 m. You’ll cross the Qilian Mountains via the 3,500-m Jinping Pass, where summer alpine meadows meet snowfields—a scenic contrast that defines this 650-km drive.

Beyond Menyuan, the terrain becomes more dramatic: the towering Qilian Mountains give way to the Danxia landforms of Zhangye National Geopark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cell service is intermittent beyond Ze Ku; download offline maps. In winter, snow chains are mandatory after October—check local forecasts. Tolls apply only on the G0612 and G3011 expressways (approximately ¥200 total). No international border crossing is involved, but you may encounter police checkpoints; carry your passport and driver’s license.
