Tongren to Deyang: A 1,500-km Journey Through Qinghai's Highlands

Stretching nearly 1,500 kilometers, the route from Tongren (青海同仁) to Deyang (四川德阳) traverses the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, crossing the towering Bayan Har Mountains and descending into the Sichuan Basin. The drive takes roughly 20–24 hours of pure driving time, depending on stops and weather, but most travelers split it over three days.

The journey begins in Tongren, a historic town known for its vibrant Tibetan Buddhist art and the nearby Rongwo Monastery, founded in 1701. As you head southeast on G213, you'll climb to passes exceeding 4,000 meters, then drop into the lush valleys of western Sichuan. The final stretch into Deyang, an industrial city near Chengdu, offers a stark contrast to the high-altitude grasslands.

The route's high passes and unpredictable weather demand caution. Roads are generally well-maintained, but winter (December–March) brings ice and snow, so check forecasts and carry snow chains. In summer, afternoon thunderstorms can cause rockfalls; avoid driving after dark.

For families, the journey is suitable for older children (5+), but the altitude may cause discomfort. Make gradual ascents, stop frequently, and carry portable oxygen canisters, available in Tongren pharmacies. Many hotels in Songpan and Deyang offer family rooms, and restaurants serve mild, kid-friendly dishes like tomato egg noodles.

Pets are allowed in most roadside guesthouses, but not in national parks like Jiuzhaigou. When booking, confirm pet policies in advance, as some hotels have strict no-pet rules.

Fatigue is a major risk on long mountain stretches. Plan rest stops every two hours. Key rest zones include Zeku County, with several service areas and clean restrooms, and a marked rest stop at the G213/G317 junction near Hongyuan. Also, watch for livestock on the road, especially yaks and sheep, which often cross without warning.

Hidden off-route spots include the serene Cuopu Lake, a 20-km detour off G317 near Seda, and the Benxi Valley, known for its autumn foliage. These less-visited areas offer a break from the tourist crowds.

The backbone of this route is the G213 national highway, which is mostly two-lane asphalt in good condition, though mountain sections can be narrow and winding. Beyond G213, the G317 and G318 provide alternatives, but G213 is the most direct. Cell coverage is spotty in remote areas, so download offline maps before departing Tongren.

Fuel stations are scarce in the high plateau; plan to fill up at Tongren, Zeku, and Huahu Lake. Diesel and 92-octane petrol are common, but 95-octane may only be available in larger towns. Carry a spare fuel can if you venture off-route.

The most breathtaking natural attraction is Huahu Lake (花湖) in Ruoergai County, a vast wetland teeming with migratory birds, best visited in June–July when wildflowers bloom. Further south, the Jiuzhaigou Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies a detour of about 100 km from Songpan, but it's easily one of the best stops Tongren, Qinghai to Deyang for its turquoise lakes and waterfalls.

Climatic conditions vary dramatically: the plateau above 3,000 meters can be cold and windy even in summer, with temperatures dropping below freezing at night, while the Sichuan Basin is warm and humid, especially in July–August. This transition makes the route visually stunning, from arid grasslands to fertile gorges.

Local commerce along the route includes Tibetan craft markets in Tongren selling thangka paintings and silver jewelry, and roadside stalls in Ruoergai offering yak butter tea and barley bread. In Songpan, the ancient town's main street is lined with teahouses and shops specializing in medicinal herbs.
