Tongren to Baoji: A 12-Hour Drive Through Loess and Monuments

The G213 from Tongren to Baoji is one of the few roads that cross the Yellow River's first major bend, connecting Tibetan Buddhist heartlands with the Qinling mountain frontier.

This 800-kilometer drive takes about 12 hours without stops, but should be stretched over two days to appreciate the changing landscapes.

Important: This route passes through the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau's eastern edge, where altitudes exceed 3,000 meters, then descends into the Wei River Valley. The road quality is generally good, but expect sections of construction.

Depart Tongren at dawn to see the Longwu River valley fog lift over barley fields. The Kanbula National Forest Park, 70 km east, features Danxia red cliffs—a geological marvel formed 65 million years ago.

After crossing into Gansu, the Laji Mountain pass at 3,400 meters offers panoramas of the Yellow River's first bend near Xunhua, where terraced fields cling to slopes.

Local markets in Linxia (known as 'Little Mecca') sell Muslim-style hats and dried apricots. In Tianshui, stop for guozhuang (Tibetan dance) performances during festivals.

For hidden gems, take the old road at Gangu County to see the 1,600-year-old Daxiangshan Grottoes, less crowded than Maijishan.

The road is safe but has blind curves on mountain passes; use high beams at night and watch for livestock. Rest areas with restrooms and snack vendors are scarce—plan stops in larger towns.

For families, the Lanzhou Aquarium (near the route) and Baoji's China Bronze Culture Museum offer educational breaks. The route is not ideal for children under 5 due to long driving hours.
