The route is generally safe, but heed the warning signs about strong crosswinds near the desert sections; they can affect large vehicles. As a family stop, the Shapotou Scenic Area offers a desert-themed playground and a cable car ride over the Yellow River, which children usually enjoy. For pets, note that most service areas only permit dogs in outdoor parking, but the Shapotou area has a designated pet-friendly picnic zone.

Fatigue management is essential: plan for a break every 2 hours. The designated rest zones with shaded parking are at Baoji, Jingning, and Zhongwei. At the Zhongwei service area, there’s a small convenience store and a coffee kiosk, but nothing more.

Local diners on the route serve regional specialties: in Pingliang, try the spicy lamb soup; in Zhongwei, the fat noodles with tomato and egg are a local staple. There are no major hotel chains off the highway, but you can find family-run guesthouses in Jingning and Zhongwei with basic amenities.
