Taiping, a small estate town in the Central Highlands, sits at 640 meters above sea level. Yala National Park, Sri Lanka's most famous wildlife reserve, lies 320 km to the southeast. The direct drive covers 6 to 7 hours, but the journey rewards travelers with waterfalls, tea country, and the island's most dramatic scenery change.

Most drivers take the A4 highway from Padiyapelella to Mahiyanganaya, then the A25 through Monaragala to Tissa. The road descends from 2,000 meters to near sea level, passing through rainforest, savanna, and scrubland. The climate shifts from misty highlands to tropical heat.

The route is a classic Sri Lankan road trip, offering a slice of the island's natural and cultural diversity.
