Suzhou to Rizhao Road Trip: Coastal Drives & Hidden Gems

The G15 expressway runs nearly straight north from Suzhou's Yangtze delta flatlands into Rizhao's rocky coastline. Early on, the route passes the 1,382-meter-long Sutong Bridge, which spares you a 2-hour ferry crossing. That span alone saves roughly 100 kilometers versus the older ferry route.

At 590 kilometers, the drive takes about 6.5 hours without traffic. Most travelers split it near Lianyungang, the midpoint at 280 kilometers, where the Huaguoshan Scenic Area offers a 30-minute leg stretch. For a deeper detour, the Yuntai Mountain tunnels add 15 minutes but yield views of terraced tea fields.

Toll fees for a standard car total 240 RMB, and fuel costs average 350 RMB at current prices. Plan for four to five rest stops, with the last one at Ganyu service area, 40 kilometers before Rizhao.

The G15 coastal expressway is the primary artery, but the G25 and G30 offer alternative routing through Huai'an and Linyi. Check real-time conditions via Jiangsu Traffic Radio FM101.1, which broadcasts in Chinese only. Road quality is excellent: concrete surfaces with minimal potholes, and lighting along the entire stretch.

Fuel stations appear every 40-50 kilometers, all accepting WeChat Pay and Alipay. Service areas like the one at Donghai offer 24-hour diesel and gasoline. For EV drivers, fast-charging stations are available at every service area, but they often have queues on weekends.

Restrooms are plentiful, but some older service areas may lack baby-changing tables.

Pet owners should note that most service areas do not have dedicated pet areas, so bring a leash and water bowl. Rizhao city itself has several pet-friendly beaches, like the Third Beach, where dogs are allowed off-leash in the early morning. Plan your breaks every two hours to combat fatigue; the Ganyu service area has a Starbucks-style lounge with recliners.

For hidden detours, the Donghai County tea gardens are a short exit off the G15, offering a 20-minute stroll through rows of Longjing bushes. The route from Rizhao port along the coastal road to Lanshan provides a scenic alternative to the expressway for the final 20 kilometers.

Rizhao's coastline is a long stretch of sandy beaches, with the Wanpingkou scenic area being the most accessible. Just north, the Donggang District has a functioning fishing port where you can buy fresh sea urchins and bypass tourist stalls. Inland, the Lingshan Bay wetland reserve, 30 kilometers west of the city, is a birdwatcher's haven with over 200 species.

Local commerce thrives on the G15 corridor. The Lianshui service area is famous for its salted duck, while the Ganyu stop sells fresh yellow croaker and dried shrimp. For a more authentic meal, exit at the Xincun Bridge and find a rural restaurant serving stir-fried sea snails.

Lianyungang is home to the Huaguoshan Scenic Area, which includes a temple complex with a 1,500-year-old ginkgo tree. It's a fine place to buy local green tea, sold by weight from ceramic jars. Don't expect plastic-wrapped souvenirs here—taste before you buy.
