Suzhou to Jiaxing Drive: Top Stops & Hidden Gems

Leaving Suzhou via the G15W (now part of G15) heading south, you'll cross the ancient Grand Canal twice before entering the lush Yangtze River Delta. This route is one of the few in China where you can see both modern high-speed rail lines and centuries-old stone arch bridges in a single glance.

The most direct route is via the G15W, a six-lane expressway with a 120 km/h speed limit. Toll costs vary by vehicle type; for a standard car, expect around ¥45. Fuel stations are plentiful, with service areas every 30-40 km offering 24-hour fuel and convenience stores.

Pets are allowed on the road but not in most service area buildings; however, outdoor picnic areas are common. To manage fatigue, plan a stop every 45 minutes. Consider taking the scenic S12 through Hunan Agricultural Park, a lesser-known spot with sunflower fields in late summer.

Just off the S12, the Yangcheng Lake area is famous for its hairy crabs (October-November). Further south, the water towns of Tongli and Luzhi are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with Tongli's 'Ping'an' ancient town offering a glimpse of Ming-Qing architecture.

The region's flat, alluvial plains are dotted with mulberry fields and fish ponds, a landscape that has inspired silk production for centuries. Local markets near Jiaxing, like the Yuehe Ancient Street, sell silk garments and traditional pastries like 'Wufangzhai' zongzi.
