Stung Treng to Samraong Drive: Road Trip Guide

Stung Treng sits at the confluence of the Sekong and Mekong Rivers, a point that historically made it a trading hub. The drive to Samraong (in Oddar Meanchey province) is roughly 400 km via National Road 68 and later National Road 6, but the actual distance depends on your final destination in Samraong. Expect at least 8 hours of driving, excluding stops.

This route cuts across northern Cambodia, crossing the Tonle Sap watershed and passing through remote, sparsely populated areas. It's a journey for travelers who want to see a side of Cambodia beyond the usual circuit.

The main route uses National Road 68 from Stung Treng south to Preah Vihear town (Tbeng Meanchey), then National Road 6 west to Samraong. Both are two-lane asphalt roads with moderate traffic. Road quality varies: sections near Stung Treng are well-maintained, while parts of NR6 after Preah Vihear can have potholes.

There are no major tolls, but several small checkpoints may require documentation, especially near the border areas. Always carry your passport and vehicle registration.

Fuel stations are sparse between major towns. The most reliable stops are at Stung Treng, Tbeng Meanchey (Preah Vihear town), and Anlong Veng. Plan to top up your tank whenever you see a station, as you might go 100 km or more without one.

• Fuel consumption for a standard car: 8–10 L/100 km, so budget accordingly.
• Diesel is widely available; premium gasoline may be scarcer.
• Consider carrying a spare fuel can if venturing off the main road.

Road safety is a concern on this route. Speeding is common, but wildlife and livestock cross without warning. Defensive driving is essential; avoid night driving if possible, as some sections have no street lighting.

Both NR68 and NR6 have some steep grades and sharp curves, especially near the Dangrek Mountains. Check your brakes and tires before departing.

For families, the drive is kid-friendly in terms of scenery but requires patience. Plan stops every 2–3 hours at major towns like Tbeng Meanchey or Anlong Veng. There are basic restaurants with Khmer dishes (noodles, rice, and grilled meats) and clean toilets.

Pet-friendly options are scarce. Most hotels in towns like Samraong or Tbeng Meanchey may not allow pets, so plan to camp or use guesthouses that are more flexible. Always confirm in advance.

Fatigue is a real risk on long stretches. Use rest areas, often simple clearings with shade, to stretch and hydrate. The town of Anlong Veng (about 60 km before Samraong) is a good point to refuel your own energy with a coffee at a local shop.

Hidden Off-Route Spots

Just off NR6, near the village of Kulen, lies the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary. It's less visited but offers a chance to see rare wildlife and small waterfalls – a worthy detour for nature lovers.

Soon after leaving Stung Treng, the landscape shifts from Mekong floodplain to dry deciduous forest and low hills. You'll cross the Prey Lang forest edge – one of Cambodia's largest remaining lowland forests. Keep an eye out for hornbills and gibbons, though they're shy.

The route passes near the Dangrek Mountains, which form the border with Thailand. The escarpment creates dramatic views, especially around Anlong Veng.

Local commerce along the road is modest. You'll see rows of wooden stalls selling fruit (look for seasonal mangosteen and durian) and sugarcane juice. The largest market hub is Tbeng Meanchey, where you can find fresh produce and basic supplies.

For a more unique experience, detour to the Preah Vihear temple (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) located on the Dangrek cliffs. It's a steep climb but offers spectacular views over the Cambodian lowlands and Thai plains.
