St. Louis to Superior Road Trip: Midwest to Lake Superior

The drive from St. Louis, MO to Superior, WI spans approximately 650 miles (1,046 km) along a route that transitions from the Mississippi River bluffs to the shores of Lake Superior. The most direct path follows I-55 N, I-270 N, I-70 W, I-72 W, US-61 N, US-151 N, I-94 W, US-53 N, and US-2 E, taking about 10–11 hours without stops.

A historic quirk: this route roughly parallels the old Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which once carried iron ore from the Lake Superior region to St. Louis steel mills. You'll cross the Mississippi River twice—once near St. Louis and again at the Great River Bridge in Burlington.

The route crosses the Driftless Area of Wisconsin, a region that escaped glacial flattening, resulting in dramatic bluffs and valleys. Near Prairie du Chien, you'll find Wyalusing State Park with sweeping Mississippi River views.
