Springfield, Missouri sits at the edge of the Ozark Mountains, Guthrie, Oklahoma on the cusp of the Great Plains. The drive spans about 280 miles via I-44 and I-35, typically taking 4.5 to 5 hours without stops. This route crosses the ancient Mississippi Embayment, where limestone bluffs give way to rolling prairies.

The James River, which flows through Springfield, is part of the White River system that eventually reaches the Gulf of Mexico. As you drive south, you'll cross the iconic Route 66 alignment near Joplin and witness the subtle shift from oak-hickory forests to tallgrass prairie. The transition is gradual, but around Miami, Oklahoma, the horizon opens dramatically.

Road quality is generally good on interstates, but US-412 west of Miami is a two-lane highway with some unlit stretches. Watch for deer at dusk, especially near the Grand Lake area. Summer thunderstorms can bring sudden downpours.
