Sisters to Pioche: Oregon High Desert to Nevada Mining Epic

The first known wagon route through what is now Pioche, NV, was blazed by miners in 1869, but the road you'll drive began as a series of indigenous trails later formalized as the Oregon Outback and the Lincoln Highway. Today, US-20 connects Sisters, OR, a town named for the Three Sisters volcanoes, to the remote Nevada mining camp that became Pioche.

This 950-mile journey crosses three states, three time zones (Pacific, Mountain, and back to Pacific? Actually, Pioche is Pacific Time), and traverses the Basin and Range province, the high desert of Oregon, the Snake River Plain, and the Great Basin.
