Shangqiu to Yangzhou: A Road Trip Guide

Your drive from Shangqiu (商丘) to Yangzhou (扬州) traces the ancient path of the Grand Canal, crossing the Yellow River floodplain and the Huai River basin. The route begins in Shangqiu, a city that was once the capital of the Shang dynasty, and ends in Yangzhou, a historic canal port that has been a center of salt trade for centuries.

The shortest path covers about 540 kilometers (335 miles) along the G30 and G2 highways, typically taking 5.5 to 6.5 hours without stops. However, the real journey is in the details: the changing accents, the shifting from wheat fields to rice paddies, and the occasional glimpse of an old canal barge.

As you leave the flat, dusty plains of Henan, the landscape transitions into the water-rich territories of Jiangsu. The route crosses the Huai River, where wetlands host migratory birds such as the Siberian crane. In autumn, the reeds turn golden, and morning mist hangs over the rice paddies.

The area around Huai'an is renowned for its freshwater aquaculture; roadside stalls often sell live crabs and fish. Further south, Yangzhou's iconic Slender West Lake (瘦西湖) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the Grand Canal itself. These sites are part of a designated cultural corridor, making them essential historical touchstones.

For a spontaneous detour, exit at Gaoyou to see the ancient post station along the canal, a quieter alternative to the more touristy spots. Local markets in Gaoyou sell salted duck eggs, a regional specialty.

The G30 Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway takes you east from Shangqiu, merging into the G2 Beijing–Shanghai Expressway near Xuzhou. Toll costs for a standard car total approximately 220 RMB, distributed across eight toll gates. Fuel prices in Henan and Jiangsu provinces hover around 7.5 RMB per liter, with a reliable network of China Petroleum and Sinopec stations clustered at every major service area.

• Drive the G30 east from Shangqiu, joining the G2 near Xuzhou, then continue south to Yangzhou.
• Service areas every 40–50 km offer food, restrooms, and fuel; notably, the Hongze Lake service area has a scenic overlook.
• Use the rest area at Huai'an for a wider food selection and clean facilities.

Road quality is generally excellent; both G30 and G2 are well-maintained, four-lane expressways with adequate lighting and clear signage. Speed limits are strictly enforced, typically 120 km/h for cars, with occasional 100 km/h zones near interchanges. Police patrols are common, especially during holiday periods.

Families will find ample child-friendly amenities at service areas, including diaper-changing stations and high chairs in restaurants. Pets are welcome at most service areas, but leashes are required and pets are not allowed inside indoor dining areas. A few service areas have dedicated pet relief zones, such as the one at the Xuzhou East service area.

To combat fatigue, plan a break every two hours. The service areas at Suining and Baoying are excellent rest stops, offering shaded parking and walking trails. Bring your own drinking water; while handy, convenience stores at service areas often have limited stock.
