Seville to Mojácar Road Trip Guide: Scenic Drive Across Andalusia

The A-92 highway, stretching from Seville to Almería province, was completed in 1992 to connect western and eastern Andalusia. This 480-kilometer route takes you from the Guadalquivir River valley to the Mediterranean coast in about 5 to 5.5 hours of driving, excluding stops.

Along the way you traverse three distinct geographical zones: the fertile plains of Seville, the Sierra Nevada foothills, and the semi-arid Tabernas Desert. The final descent into Mojácar reveals sweeping views of the Cabo de Gata cliffs.

The A-92 is a well-maintained autovía with a speed limit of 120 km/h, though sections near mountain passes reduce to 100 km/h. Fuel stations are plentiful every 30–40 km along the main highway, but prices tend to be 5% higher than in cities. It is advisable to fill up in Seville before departure.

Tolls are absent on the entire A-92 and A-7 sections to Mojácar. Road quality is excellent, with two lanes per direction and wide shoulders. However, the A-92N between Granada and Almería can be narrow and winding in some stretches; drive with caution during rain as runoff may occur.

• Electric vehicle charging: Fast chargers available every 60 km at service areas (Iberdrola, Endesa).

The drive begins amid olive groves and sunflower fields near Seville, gradually rising into the Sierra Morena foothills. After about 100 km, the landscape transforms into the wine region of Montilla-Moriles, where vineyards dominate the valleys around the town of Lucena.

Approaching Granada, the Sierra Nevada range appears on the left, with peaks exceeding 3,000 meters. If you take a short detour (30 minutes) via the GR-3302, you reach the Fuente Grande viewpoint overlooking the Genil River canyon. Continuing east, the terrain becomes increasingly arid as you enter the Tabernas Desert, Europe’s only true desert, known for its badlands and spaghetti western film sets.

• Must-see natural stops: Mirador de la Marquesa (wind turbines), Tabernas Desert (film sets), Cabo de Gata Natural Park.
• Local commerce: Olive oil and wine in Lucena; pottery in Níjar; esparto grass crafts in Sorbas.

The A-92 is generally safe, but watch for livestock crossings on rural stretches near Armilla. The most challenging section is the descent from the Puerto del Lobo pass (1,100 m) where grades reach 6%. Use low gear and engine braking to avoid brake fade.

Designated rest areas appear every 20 km with picnic tables and bathrooms. The service area at Area de Servicio de La Roda (km 200) has a playground, nursing room, and a restaurant serving local tapas. Pet-friendly stops include the pet-rest area at Area de Descanso de Guadix (km 320) with a fenced off-leash zone.

• Family tip: Break the drive with a stop at the Parque de las Ciencias in Granada (2 hours).
• Pet tips: Carry water bowls; many rest areas lack shade. The pet area at La Roda is excellent.
