Savannakhet to Loei: A Cross-Border Drive Worth Taking

The Savannakhet–Loei route crosses the Mekong at the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, a structure that opened in 2007 and shortened the overland journey by hundreds of kilometres. This border crossing is a quiet alternative to the busier Vientiane–Nong Khai gateway.

Driving the 280-kilometre corridor takes roughly five to six hours, excluding border formalities. The route's appeal lies in its unassuming rural character, limestone karsts, and the stark contrast between Lao flatlands and Thai highlands.

Road conditions are generally good, but expect occasional potholes near rural villages and limited street lighting at night. Drink stalls and petrol stations are welcome rest stops, but the best fatigue break is the Phu Kradueng viewpoint pull-off at km 45 on Highway 211, where you can stretch and see the Mekong snaking below.

• Family-friendly: The Sirindhorn Dam pier at Pak Chom has a small park with playground equipment and a café.
• Pet-friendly: Many resorts near Pak Chom accept dogs; check with specific accommodation before arrival.
• Hidden gem: Take a right at Ban Song Khon and follow the dirt road 5 km to an old French-era ferry dock, abandoned since the bridge opened.

Beyond the flat rice paddies of Savannakhet, the Mekong riverbank east of Mukdahan hides a chain of eroded sandstone cliffs called Kaeng Kabao, a local picnic spot often missed. Further west, Phu Langka National Park (near Khemmarat) offers forested viewpoints and a 100-metre waterfall after rains.

• UNESCO: While not on the route itself, the Phanom Rung Historical Park in Buriram is a 3-hour detour south, but for a closer heritage stop, the Phra That Phanom stupa (in Nakhon Phanom) is only 45 minutes north of the bridge.
• Local commerce: Tamarind and rice farms dominate; roadside stalls sell sweet tamarind balls and rice crackers.

From Mukdahan, follow Highway 212 west along the Mekong until Khemmarat, then continue on Highway 211 through Pak Chom and finally connect to Highway 201 into Loei town. The entire route is paved, mostly two-lane, and relatively flat until Pak Chom.

• Border crossing: Vehicles require a Carnet de Passage; drivers need a valid international driving permit and passport. Apply for Lao visa on arrival.
• Fuel: Petrol stations cluster near Mukdahan and every 30–40 km along main roads. Carry cash for rural pumps that lack card facilities.
• Tolls: No expressway tolls on this route; only the bridge toll (~$2 for cars) applies.
