Santa Fe to Georgetown Road Trip: Desert to Hill Country

This route from Santa Fe, New Mexico (elevation 7,199 feet) to Georgetown, Texas (elevation 759 feet) drops over 6,400 feet across 900 miles of I-25, I-40, and I-35. The journey crosses the Continental Divide near Grants, NM, and traverses the Llano Estacado before descending into the Texas Hill Country. US-84 from Santa Fe to I-25 offers an alternative scenic bypass through Las Vegas, NM.

Driving time without stops is 12–13 hours, but we recommend a 2–3 day trip to absorb the landscape. The best stops between Santa Fe and Georgetown include natural wonders like the Pecos River canyon and route-focused events like the UFO festival in Roswell (if you detour).

The primary route follows I-25 south from Santa Fe to I-40 east near Albuquerque, then I-40 through the Texas Panhandle to I-35 south in Oklahoma City. An alternative shorter route (U.S. 84 via Clovis) saves 50 miles but adds rural two-lane roads. Fuel stations are abundant every 30–50 miles along interstates, but sparse on U.S. 84 between Santa Rosa and Clovis.
