Sacramento to Murphys: Road Trip Guide to California's Gold Country

This 90-mile journey along State Routes 50 and 49 traces the historic Gold Country, where the 1849 California Gold Rush transformed the American West. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours without stops, but the real reward lies in exploring the dozens of historic towns, vineyards, and parks along the way.

The route is best known for its transition from the flat Sacramento Valley to the rolling Sierra Nevada foothills. As you climb from an elevation of 30 feet in Sacramento to over 2,100 feet in Murphys, the climate cools and the landscape shifts from agricultural fields to oak woodlands and pine forests.

The route passes through varied landscapes. East of Folsom, the American River Canyon offers dramatic views. In Placerville (elevation 1,867 ft), downtown is a National Main Street with gold-rush-era buildings housing antique shops and bakeries.
