Leaving Rock Springs, WY (elevation 6,191 ft), you immediately enter the Red Desert, a high-altitude cold desert where the Continental Divide splits. For the next 514 miles to Pierre, SD, you'll traverse sagebrush steppe, the Black Hills, and the Great Plains.
