Road Trip Zhuhai to Chenzhou: Route Guide, Stops, and Tips

The G4 Expressway traces the path of an ancient imperial post road that once connected Guangzhou to Beijing. Today's drive from Zhuhai to Chenzhou covers roughly 550 kilometers, and the journey time is about 6.5 hours without stops. This route crosses the Nanling Mountains, a natural boundary between subtropical and temperate zones, so expect dramatic shifts in vegetation and air quality.

The terrain climbs from sea level at the Pearl River Delta to over 300 meters near Chenzhou, with the highway winding through several long tunnels. The most notable is the Yizhang Tunnel, which stretches 2.2 kilometers and marks the border between Guangdong and Hunan provinces.

The most hazardous stretch is the Nanjing Tunnel complex, which accumulates fog quickly, especially during spring mornings. Reduced visibility is common, so use headlights and maintain a safe distance. Traffic can be heavy during Chinese New Year holidays, so avoid traveling during these peak periods.

For families, the Ganzhou service area has a playground and clean restrooms, while the Yizhang service area has a 24-hour restaurant and showers. If you need a more substantial break, take the Yizhang exit and visit the Baima Lake Wetland Park, where children can see egrets and lotus flowers.

To combat fatigue, plan two mandatory stops of at least 20 minutes each. The Xiongzhou service area (around 300 km) offers a pleasant grassy area for stretching, and the Chenzhou West exit has a truck stop with basic facilities.

Fuel stops are essential on this route, as services are sparse between Guangdong and Hunan. Plan to refuel at the Shenzhen-Guangzhou service area (约200 km) and the Yizhang service area (约400 km). Expect to pay around 0.7 yuan per liter more in Hunan compared to Guangdong due to regional taxes.

The G4 surface is generally smooth, but be alert for sections on the Hunan side that have concrete slabs with slight elevation changes. Speed limits are 120 km/h in Guangdong and 100 km/h in Hunan, and there are several fixed radar traps.

Near Chenzhou, the Suxian Mountain offers a cable car ride and panoramic views over the city, but it is also a sacred Daoist site with a temple dating back to the Tang Dynasty. This is a good place to stretch your legs and experience the area's spiritual history.
