Road Trip Guide: Dong Hoi to Tuyen Quang

The drive from Dong Hoi to Tuyen Quang spans roughly 500 km (310 miles) along National Route 1A and then QL.2, taking about 10-12 hours of pure driving time. This route cuts through the narrow waist of Vietnam, passing major cities like Vinh, Thanh Hoa, and Hanoi before climbing into the northeastern highlands. The route is toll-free on QL.1A segments, but the Cầu Giẽ- Ninh Bình expressway (if you choose it) has tolls. The total toll cost for an average car is about 200,000 VND. Plan for rest stops at major service areas like those near Ninh Binh and Phu Ly.

The route's greatest attractions are its UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is the starting point, famous for its caves, but you'll leave it behind quickly. Continuing north, the Red River Delta offers endless rice paddies and traditional villages. In Tuyen Quang, the ethnic minority cultures add vibrant colors to the highland commerce.

Climatically, the route transitions from tropical monsoon in the south to subtropical highland weather in the north. Expect hot, humid conditions around Dong Hoi and Vinh (30-35°C) but cooler, mistier weather as you climb toward Tuyen Quang. The best time to drive is in the dry season, from November to April.
