Qufu to Taizhou, Jiangsu: A Road Trip Guide

Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, lies in Shandong province, while Taizhou, Jiangsu, is a canal-side city known for its ancient water town. The 520-kilometer drive links northern plains to southern waterways, crossing the Yellow River and the Huaihe River. The journey takes roughly 6.5 hours via the G3 Beijing–Shanghai Expressway and G2 Beijing–Shanghai Expressway, but expect 7–8 hours with breaks.

The route is well-serviced by toll roads, with tolls costing around ¥250 for a car. Fuel prices vary; premium gasoline costs about ¥8.5 per liter. Diesel is cheaper. Service areas appear every 40–50 kilometers, offering fuel, food, and restrooms.

Road quality is excellent, mostly four-lane divided highways with speeds up to 120 km/h. Weather can affect driving; summer is hot and humid, winter is cold and dry. Fog is common in autumn mornings.

The route transitions from the flat farmland of the North China Plain to the lake-dotted water towns of Jiangsu. Near the Huaihe River, you'll find wetlands and bird watching. The Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, runs through Huai'an and Taizhou, offering scenic detours.

Xuzhou, a coal-mining hub, is home to the Han Terracotta Warriors Museum. Huai'an is the hometown of Zhou Enlai, with a memorial hall. Taizhou's old town features the Fengcheng River Scenic Area, a must-see. Local cuisines vary: Shandong's savory dumplings give way to Jiangsu's sweet and sour dishes. Service areas often sell regional snacks.

Speed limits and traffic are strictly enforced, with cameras on elevated sections. For families, the route is safe and child-friendly; service areas have playgrounds and clean restrooms. Pet-friendly policies vary; many service areas allow pets on leash, but hotels in Taizhou might not. Check in advance.

Rest areas are plentiful, but for off-route spots, consider the Muliang Ancient Village in Jiangsu, a hidden gem with ancient houses. Or the Gaoyou Lake area for lotus flowers in summer. To manage fatigue, plan to stop every 2 hours at a service area.
