Putuo to Putian Drive: Coastal Views, Temples & Budget Tips

The G15 Shenhai Expressway links Putuo (Zhoushan) to Putian in Fujian, a 580-kilometer run that passes through the heart of China's eastern seaboard. One of the first sights you'll notice is the dramatic change in bridge engineering: the route begins on the 48-kilometer-long Zhoushan Cross-Sea Bridge complex, the world's largest continuous sea-crossing bridge group, before heading onto mainland highways.

This drive cuts across the subtropical monsoon zone, where the average annual temperature stays around 17°C, and it passes through two provinces famous for their maritime history. Expect tolls to cost roughly ¥350–400 for standard cars, plus fuel at around ¥0.8–0.9 per kilometer, making the total running cost about ¥800–900 each way.

The G15 is a modern four-lane expressway maintained to high standards, with a speed limit of 120 km/h for most sections. You'll merge onto it via the G9211 Ningbo-Zhoushan Expressway, which transitions smoothly from the bridge to the mainland.

As you leave the Putuo Island bridge, the sea is visible on both sides for about 20 minutes. Once on the mainland, the landscape transforms into tea terraces and dense bamboo groves near the Fujian border. The most striking natural feature is the Wuyi Mountain range, which you'll see to the west after passing through the Ningde area.

For a break, consider a short detour to Fenghuang Mountain in Ningde, or the Meizhou Island, just off the coast from Putian, which is dedicated to the goddess Mazu. This island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate, known for its pilgrimage culture and stone fishing villages.

Local commerce along the route is dominated by seafood restaurants, especially around the Ningde and Fuzhou service areas. Look for signs advertising “seaweed soup” and “oyster omelet”, local specialties.

The G15 is generally well-maintained, but watch out for occasional fog in the coastal sections during spring. The road surface is concrete in some stretches, which can be noisier than asphalt; take it as a cue to check your tire pressure.

For local culture, consider a short detour to the ancient town of Sanfang Qixiang in Fuzhou, which is just 3 km off the highway. It's a maze of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, hosting craft shops and teahouses—an ideal place to stretch your legs.
