Phnom Penh to Sa Dec: A Scenic Drive Through the Mekong Delta

The drive from Phnom Penh to Sa Dec is a 186-km journey on National Road 1 (NR1), connecting Cambodia to Vietnam's Mekong Delta. It's a route steeped in history, as it follows the same corridor used by the French colonial administration to link Saigon with the Cambodian capital.

Your first milestone is the Neak Loeung Bridge, a 2.2-km cable-stayed bridge that opened in 2015, replacing a ferry. It cuts roughly an hour off the trip, making the total drive about 4 hours without stops.

As you leave Phnom Penh, the landscape transitions from urban sprawl to vast rice paddies. The flat delta offers unbroken views of the Mekong's tributaries, dotted with traditional stilt houses. During the rainy season (May–October), the paddies turn emerald; in the dry season, they're golden and dusty.

The region is also home to the UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear Temple, but that's a detour north of Phnom Penh, not on this route. However, the delta itself is culturally significant, with floating markets like Cai Be, a worthwhile stop before Sa Dec. Local commerce thrives along the riverbanks, where you can sample exotic fruit like rambutans and mangosteen.

For hidden gems, turn off NR1 at Tan Phu and follow the backroads to the Thanh Dong temple complex, a serene Khmer-style pagoda surrounded by flower gardens.
