Phayao to Phrae: Scenic Drive Guide

The route from Phayao to Phrae follows Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road), a major north-south artery in northern Thailand. The drive covers approximately 110 kilometers, typically taking 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and stops. This corridor is part of the historic Lanna Kingdom, with remnants of ancient settlements and trade routes still visible along the way.

Driving this route offers a transition from the flat plains of Phayao, nestled beside the 17-kilometer-long Kwan Phayao lake, to the rolling hills and valley of Phrae, famous for its teak forests and traditional wooden houses. The journey is a microcosm of northern Thai geography, with rice paddies, orchards, and mountains along the way.

Road safety is generally good, but watch for agricultural vehicles and motorcycles entering the road from side lanes. The highway is well-lit in urban sections, but unlit in rural stretches – drive with headlights at all times. Speed limits are 80 km/h outside towns and 50 km/h within. There are occasional police checkpoints, so carry your license and vehicle documents.

For families, a recommended stop is the Phayao Kwan Phayao Park, just outside the city, where kids can feed fish in the lake. In Phrae, the Ban Thung Hong weaving village offers workshops on traditional cloth making.

Fatigue management: The drive is short, but if you feel tired, use the rest areas at the Ngao police station or the Den Chai district office, which have shade and benches. Hidden off-route spots include the Phra Chao Ton Luang temple, located on a hill in Song, offering a panoramic view and a peaceful atmosphere.

Highway 1 is a well-maintained two-to-four-lane highway, with sections crossing through small towns and farmland. The road is generally flat initially, rising gradually toward Phrae. Mobile phone coverage is good throughout, and there are numerous fuel stations, especially around the mid-point at Ban Tha Fa.

Fuel prices are standard, but it's wise to fill up before leaving Phayao if you plan to explore off-route. The route crosses the Yom River near Den Chai, a tributary of the Nan River. There are toll-free roadways, and restrooms are available at most gas stations.
