Pattaya to Sakon Nakhon: Road Trip Guide

Few roads in Thailand stitch together coastal glamour and northeast plateau austerity as jarringly as the 620-kilometer run from Pattaya to Sakon Nakhon. This drive, which typically takes 7 to 8 hours by car, follows a series of national highways—starting with Route 36 north to Route 2 through the Korat Plateau, then Route 22 slicing into the Sakon Nakhon basin.

The plateau you cross is geologically a vast Cretaceous sandstone basin, the same bedrock that hosts the temple ruins towns like Phimai and Phanom Rung. Moisture from the Gulf of Thailand sticks to this side of the Dong Phaya Yen range, creating a sharp weather gradient: expect humidity south of Khao Yai and dry heat once you're over the escarpment north of Pak Chong.

Route 2 is a well-lit four-lane divided highway for most of its length, but the stretch between Nakhon Ratchasima and Buriram sees frequent U-turn openings for tractors—slow down at green-colored posts. Speed limits are 90 km/h on two-lane sections and 80 km/h in villages; use Waze with the “traffic” layer.

• Pet-friendly: The Bai Mai Resort near Pak Chong allows dogs in their garden bungalows; check with them in advance.
• Fatigue management: Use the '70-70 rule'—every 70 km or 70 minutes take a 7-minute break at a highway rest plaza.

Hidden off-route, the Phra Ruang Hot Springs in Phanom Dong Rak district (off Route 2134) offers a picnic-perfect detox soak; local guides point to a stone-lined pool that never exceeds 42°C.

Pattaya to Sakon Nakhon is a geological slide from marine sediment to ancient volcanism. Near Buriram, dark basalt hills like Khao Kradong rise from rice plains—these are extinct volcanoes, and their quarried stone built local shrines. The route also skirts the Phanom Rung sanctuary atop an extinct cinder cone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nominee (though not yet listed).

Just north of the highway, the Phu Phra Bat Historical Park near Ban Phue offers a quieter alternative, an ensemble of centuries-old rock shelters about 60 km east of Udon Thani. If you need a local-commerce marker, stop at Ban Kork Kong’s silk-village workshop cluster in Surin, where weavers still use traditional looms.

The trunk of this journey is Route 2 (Thanarat Road) linking Saraburi to Nakhon Ratchasima, but from Pattaya you first take Route 36, then join Route 331 toward Hin Kong. At Pak Chong, turn onto Route 2090 to cut across the national park's eastern flank—this avoids the thrum of trucks on Highway 2.

• Fuel: PTT and Bangchak stations cluster at every major junction (Laem Chabang, Khorat, Buriram). To optimize cost, fill up outside Pattaya city limits—prices drop ~1 baht/liter in rural provinces.
• Road tolls: Only if you take the motorway M7 from Bangkok; this route has zero tolls.
