Nyingchi to Nagqu: A High-Altitude Road Trip Guide

The 320-kilometer drive from Nyingchi to Nagqu is a journey from Tibet's lush, forested southeast to its windswept northern plateau, crossing the dramatic Sejila Mountains and the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley. The route, primarily via G318 and G317, gains over 2,000 meters in elevation, culminating at the 4,500-meter-high Nagqu town. This transition is not just a change in landscape but a shift in climate, ecology, and culture.

The asphalt on G318 and G317 is generally in good condition, but be prepared for gravel detours due to ongoing maintenance. The 7-9 hour drive includes mandatory 30-minute rest stops for altitude acclimatization, making it a full-day affair.

Fuel stations are sparse: only a handful exist between Bayi Town and Bomi, so always top up in Nyingchi. It's wise to carry extra fuel if you plan to explore off-route.
