When you drive from Ningbo to Anji, you're tracing part of the route taken by world leaders during the 2016 G20 Summit, which held its secondary meetings in Hangzhou. This 220-kilometer corridor links China's busiest port city to a county that earns its nickname as the 'village of bamboo' – Anji produces one-fifth of the nation's bamboo flooring.

The journey typically takes 3.5 hours non-stop via the G92 and S14 highways. But that's if you ignore the ancient water towns and bamboo forests waiting just off the exit ramps. Here's how to make the drive genuinely rewarding.

The region's geology is karst limestone, which explains the dramatic cliffs and caves near the S14's final stretch. Just before Anji, the landscape transforms into endless bamboo groves – a sight that's most spectacular in May after the rains. You'll also pass close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the West Lake Cultural Landscape in Hangzhou, though it's a notable 30-km detour.

Geographically, the route crosses the Hangzhou Bay and the Qiantang River, famous for its tidal bore. If you time your drive for the 18th day of the lunar month, you can witness the 'Silver Dragon' from the riverside service area – a natural spectacle that has inspired local poetry for centuries.
