Missoula to Thermopolis: Wild West Road Trip Guide

Driving from Missoula, Montana, to Thermopolis, Wyoming, covers roughly 400 miles across the northern Rockies. The route follows US-287 south through Butte, then east across the Continental Divide before descending into the Wind River Basin. US-287 and I-90 form the backbone of the journey. From Missoula, take I-90 east to Butte, then south on I-15 for 12 miles to exit 102 for US-287 south. After West Yellowstone, the road becomes a two-lane highway through national forests. Fuel stations are sparse between West Yellowstone and Dubois (about 130 miles), so fill up in West Yellowstone or Ennis. In Dubois, there are two gas stations; in Thermopolis, several options.
