Middelburg to Vlissingen Road Trip: Scenic Drive Through Zeeland

The drive from Middelburg to Vlissingen covers just 10 km along the N254 highway. Historically, this route follows the former dike line that connected the island of Walcheren. Despite its short length, the journey offers a microcosm of Zeeland's geography.

The N254 runs parallel to the Kanaal door Walcheren, a canal opened in 1873. Drivers will cross a lift bridge at the entrance to Vlissingen. the route passes through agricultural land and marsh.

The N254 is well-lit and in good condition. No tolls. Be alert for cyclists and tractors. Night illumination is adequate except at the bridge. Safety tip: reduce speed on the bridge during strong crosswinds.

Family-friendly stop: Miniature Walcheren in Oost-Souburg, a park with tiny models (10 min walk from route). Also, the Reptile Zoo Iguana in Vlissingen is near the end point.

• Pet-friendly: Park at the canal path (just off N254 near Groot Abeele) for a dog walk. Cafe De Kazerne in Middelburg welcomes dogs.
• Rest zone: Pull-off near the Oost-Souburg exit (northbound) with benches. For a nap, the parking lot at the Vlissingen beach.

Hidden off-route spot: The ruined Fort Rammekens, east of Vlissingen (2 min detour). It's a 16th-century fort. Also, the village of Oud-Sabbinge has a small historic church.

The N254 is a two-lane undivided highway with a speed limit of 80 km/h. There are no tolls. Fuel stations are concentrated near the Middelburg exit and at the Vlissingen harbor. Expect to spend around €2 on fuel (€1.80/litre, efficient car).

Parking is available at both ends: free parking at the outskirts of Middelburg, paid lots in Vlissingen center. The route is not suited for large RVs. Traffic is moderate during rush hours.

UNESCO World Heritage: The Delta Works are nearby (Veerse Gatdam and Oosterscheldekering), about 15 km detour. You can visit the Delta Park Neeltje Jans for exhibits.

The climate is maritime: mild winters, cool summers. Wind is common, especially near the canal. Scenic sunset views can be caught from the Vlissingen boulevard, but not during the drive due to orientation. However, the bridge offers a quick photo stop.
