Safety on US-93 is generally good, but watch for wildlife: deer near the Pioche-Caliente corridor, and antelope between Ely and Jackpot. The road is unlit for 90% of its length; drive with high beams when no traffic approaches. In winter, the Connors Pass (6,280 ft) between Caliente and Ely can see black ice. Check NDOT cameras before heading out. Family-friendly stops include the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge (mile marker 28, just south of Alamo) with a 1-mile walking trail and an observation deck for waterfowl.
