Before the 1999 handover, no direct road linked Macau to mainland China's expressway network; now the A1 highway connects you to the Western Pearl River Delta. This route is worth driving for the dramatic shift from coastal delta to the red-earth hills of Fujian, but plan for the 520 kilometers and about 6.5 hours without stops.

The drive begins on the Macau Taipa Bridge, then follows the A1 past Zhuhai, merging onto the G15 Shenhai Expressway through Guangdong. The scenery evolves from dense urban sprawl to agricultural flatlands, then into the Wuyi Mountains' forested slopes near Longyan.

For optimal pacing, break the trip in Xiamen or Meizhou. The first leg from Macau to Xiamen is 470 km and can be done in one go, but a stop at Meizhou adds a cultural layer without much detour.
