Logan to Cheyenne: A Road Trip Through Utah and Wyoming

Logan, Utah sits at the mouth of Logan Canyon on US-89. Cheyenne, Wyoming lies 286 miles east across the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains. The most efficient route uses US-89, I-84, I-80, and I-25, taking about 4 hours 45 minutes without stops.

US-89 from Logan to Brigham City was once part of the historic Lincoln Highway. This road trip crosses three mountain passes: Sardine Summit, Echo Summit, and the Wasatch Front. It blends fertile valleys, high desert plateaus, and the stark beauty of Wyoming's high plains.

The route offers a compact but diverse cross-section of the Intermountain West. From the alpine cache of Logan Canyon to the wind-swept Laramie Plains, you'll experience dramatic shifts in altitude and ecology.

I-80 between Salt Lake City and Cheyenne is a major transcontinental freight corridor. Expect heavy truck traffic, especially near the Utah-Wyoming border. The road is well-maintained but can be narrow in places.

Fuel stops are plentiful along I-80 every 30–50 miles. In Wyoming, stations become sparser between Rock Springs and Rawlins (120 miles). Always fill up in Evanston or Green River before crossing the Red Desert.

• Gas prices: Generally higher in remote Wyoming towns than in Utah urban centers.
• Diesel: Available at all major truck stops.
• EV charging: Level 2 chargers in Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Evanston, Rock Springs, and Cheyenne. DC fast chargers are limited to urban hubs.

I-80 in Wyoming is notorious for high winds, especially between Arlington and Laramie. Crosswinds can exceed 50 mph, making it dangerous for high-profile vehicles. Check weather conditions at WYDOT's webcams before departure.

Winter travel (November–April) requires snow tires or chains. I-80 closes frequently during blizzards. Summer thunderstorms bring sudden hail and reduced visibility.

• Rest areas: Plentiful every 60 miles. Notable ones include Echo (Utah), Evanston (Wyoming), and Laramie (Wyoming).
• Family stops: Weber County Dinosaur Park (Ogden), Lagoon Amusement Park (Farmington), and the Wyoming Dinosaur Center (Thermopolis, 2 hrs north of I-90).
• Fatigue management: Take a break at Coalville, UT (exit 164) where a park benches and shade exist.

The drive begins in Cache Valley, a fertile agricultural basin ringed by the Wasatch and Bear River mountains. US-89 follows the Bear River through rolling hay fields and past historic dairy farms. After Brigham City, the route climbs Sardine Summit (5,200 ft) with views of the Great Salt Lake.

Descending into Ogden, the Wasatch Front urban corridor begins. From Ogden to Salt Lake City, I-15 runs parallel to the Wasatch Range, with ski resorts like Snowbasin and Sundance visible to the east.

East of Salt Lake City, I-80 climbs Parley's Canyon (5,800 ft) and reaches the summit at 7,000 ft near Park City. The landscape opens into mountain meadows and aspen groves. After Echo Reservoir, the descent into the Wyoming Basin reveals vast sagebrush steppe.

• Antelope Island State Park (off I-15 near Layton): Bison herds and Great Salt Lake views.
• Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge: A wetland haven for waterfowl, just west of I-15.
• Fort Bridger State Historic Site (exit 34 on I-80): A restored 19th-century trading post.
