The overland route from Loei in Thailand to Kampong Thom in Cambodia is a 650-kilometer haul that traverses three countries if you detour through Laos, but the standard crossing uses the Chong Mek–Vang Tao border. Unlike the typical Bangkok–Cambodia corridor, this route cuts through the Isaan plateau's eastern edge, crosses the Mekong at Pakse (if you take Route 13), and eventually meets National Road 6 in Cambodia.

Soon after leaving Loei, the road skirts the Phu Kradueng National Park, known for its sandstone cliffs and pine trees; the park's summit trail is a popular trek. Further east, the Mekong River at Pakse offers scenic viewpoints, and you'll cross the friendship bridge into Cambodia near Vang Tao.
