Lincang to Bac Ha Road Trip Guide: Scenic Drive

The route from Lincang (Yunnan, China) to Bac Ha (Lào Cai, Vietnam) crosses the border at Hà Khẩu (Hekou) and follows National Highway QL4D through the Hoang Lien Son mountains. Historically, this corridor was part of the Yunnan–Vietnam Railway trade route, but today it's a quiet road for adventurous drivers.

The drive covers approximately 320 kilometers, with a duration of 6–8 hours depending on border crossing times and road conditions. The elevation ranges from 1,500 meters in Lincang to 1,200 meters in Bac Ha, offering diverse mountain scenery.

The journey starts on G214 south from Lincang, then merges onto G8011 toward Hekou. After crossing the border, follow QL4D east to Bac Ha. The border crossing at Hekou is open 8 AM–8 PM daily; expect 30–60 minutes for formalities.

• Fuel: Petrol stations are frequent on the Chinese side, but sparse in Vietnam after the border. Fill up before leaving Lincang.
• Tolls: The G8011 has tolls totaling ~150 CNY; Vietnamese QL4D is toll-free.
• Road quality: Chinese side is well-paved, Vietnamese side has some rough patches but is generally good.
